Book Review: Prophecy by Eleri Drake

Image
Have you ever read a tagline for a book and knew immediately that you needed to read it? That was me with this book. "She can read everyone's mind but his." I am sold.  The start of this book introduces a mother that is desperate to send her daughters through time to protect them and she sends each of them with one of her powers. Serena is our FMC. She got her mother's ability to read minds and she has been living with a traveling group of people. One night while she was dancing, she comes across a man whose mind she gets nothing from. A series of events leads to them working together to clear her adoptive brothers name as it becomes obvious to him that she is the woman mentioned in a prophecy that has been passed down through his family.  Overall, I really enjoyed this. I liked the writing, the characters and the magic. The tension was amazing - he wants to deny the attraction between them due to the prophecy that he truly believes in and it makes for so many good mo...

Book Review: Possess Me! (I Want You To) by Fae Quin

Image
Fae Quin's writing just keeps getting better and better. A huge thank you to Fae for giving me a chance to read an ARC of this novel. Possess Me! (I Want You To) delivers a story for those of us who grew up wanting more from Casper the Friendly Ghost.       The first of the two main characters is Luca, he feels like he is for those of us that are the eldest child & grew up with way too much on our shoulders. We meet him at a low point in his life but his creativity and outlook on life had me rooting for him the entire time. The way Fae describes emotions through Luca hit home for me, something that she has done before with Baxter in Let Your Hearts Be Light. Finding mental health rep resonates for me means so much. The second of the main characters is Prudence. After meeting Pru in Bite Me, I wasn’t sure how I’d feel about him in this novel but in getting a deeper look inside his head and what he has been through, I was quickly able to fall in...

Book Review: The Devil Takes by Fae Quin

Image
This review was written when the novella came out in February of 2023.  Fae Quin’s The Devil Takes has left me wanting more. A big thank you to Fae for giving me a chance to read an ARC of this novella. I’ve read my fair share of Hades & Persephone retellings but this one sticks out from the rest. Hades is Haden, a very mysterious alpha hidden behind a skull mask and covered in scars. Persephone is Percy, a college student omega that is trying his best to get by in a world that hasn’t been very kind to him.       I love Percy, he’s a sunshine boy with a love for plants and a big heart for small things that most of us would overlook 🦗. Near the ending, Percy is able to put his foot down on something that has been causing him a great deal of pain and I was rooting for him the entire time. Haden remains mysterious throughout the novella even during his POV chapters, we know from his POV that he feels torn between the role he’s been given in the underworld and ...

Book Review: Famous Last Words by Gillian McAllister

Image
I devoured this book in one day. I had seen this book floating around as it was released but it wasn't until I actually read the synopsis that I knew I had to get my hands on it. A woman's first day back to work after maternity leave gets interrupted by news that her husband is a part of a hostage situation...where he's the one that's taken the hostages. The book is fast paced and interesting - the actual hostage situation ends in the first 25% of the book and the rest is her dealing with life afterwards which took me by surprise. The way that she has to look back on her life to see if she should have seen something like this happening had my mind spinning. I was able to guess a couple things correctly, but the twists still kept me on my toes.  This book made me realize that I need to read more of the mystery genre, I can't wait to read more of Gillian McAllisters novels.

Reading Recommendations: Trans/Non Binary Characters

Image
For the 2025 Trans Rights Readathon, I wanted to compile a list of books that I have enjoyed with Trans and/or Non-Binary characters. You can find more information on the readathon here .  I personally have stuck with a focus on the characters here, authors don't owe us their backstories or pronouns. There are a few where the character is referred to by their dead name and misgendered, due to not being out to family or due to the historical time period. I will note it next to each one. There are also a few spoilers as with some of the characters, it is not immediately revealed that they are trans. I Shall Never Fall In Love by Hari Conner | Gender Non-Conforming Main Character | This pretty historical YA graphic novel has a character whose friends call them George and they wear men's clothing while in their own home, even cutting their hair short later in the book. This book has deals with the racism, queerphobia, sexism, classism, and other bigotries of the time period it take...

Reading Recommendations: Vampires

Image
I have a long history of liking books with vampires - so much so that my older brothers nickname for me when I was in middle school was "Vampire Girl." Here are my favorite vampire reads and a few that I have been meaning to check out. If you have any favorite vampire books that you think I should check out, let me know in the comments. I left out some mainstream ones like the Twilight Saga, the Vampire Academy series and the Simon Snow books.  🩸 My favorites: The Lore & Lust series by Karla Nikole | MM | I love this author and the vampire world she has created. The Lore & Lust series has 3 novels and 1 novella, and I have read them all multiple times. Nico, the love interest for the first 2 books, is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters. Karla's vampires are fun because they do not drink the blood of humans, prolonged time with human blood as their primary feeding source weakens them. The Vampires of Eden series by Karla Nikole | MM | set in the same...

Reading Recommendations: Cowboy / Small Town Romance

Image
Back in April of 2024, Elsie Silver sent me down a rabbit hole of Cowboy romances. Since then I have seen debates on whether they all actually count as Cowboys but I am not here for that. The following list has books where the (or at least one) MMC works on a ranch or farm and is not afraid to get his hands dirty. If you have any Cowboy romances that aren't on this list, please drop them in the comments for me.  Note: I have read all of Elsie Silvers book with the exception of Wild Side as it just came out last week. I did only include my favorites on this list so the list would be more than just her.  🐎My Favorites: Flawless by Elsie Silver | MF | He is a rodeo cowboy and she is his agent's daugther who gets put in charge of keeping him in line Reckless by Elsie Silver | MF | Another rodeo cowboy, she is a doctor, accidental pregnancy is the big plot line Heartless by Elsie Silver | MF | He runs the family ranch and is a single dad, she is the nanny he hires for the summer W...

Reading Recommendations - Hockey Romances

Image
I am the biggest fan of Hockey Romances. I grew up going to local OHL games and I have always been a fan of the sport. I've read other sports romances but none of them hit as hard as Hockey Romances. I am only human so there is a chance that I have gotten something wrong below - let me know and I will get it fixed. If you've got a Hockey Romance that you think I should check out, let me know in the comments.  🏒My Favorites: Icebreaker by A.L. Graziadei | MM | This hockey romance actually made me cry due to how relatable the mental health rep was.  Game Changers series by Rachel Reid | MM | You can't have a hockey romance rec list without including this series by Rachel Reid. I love these books, each couple is different and Ilya who is the main male of two of the books and has at least a small appearance in all of the others is on my list of all time favorite fictional characters. Rookie Mistake by Anna Zabo & LA Witt | MM | I was honestly surprised by how much I enjoye...

Book Review: Deep End by Ali Hazelwood

Image
Me liking this book as much as I did honestly shocked me. I DNF'd Love Hypothesis when it first came out and I believe that Bride would have been an absolute banger if it had been released in 2009. I honestly wasn't even planning on reading it until I saw the reactions it was getting on Booktok. Based on the reactions, I thought this was going to be nothing but smut. It's not though, in my opinion, it's a good exploration of BDSM and light kink. Scarlett and Lukas communicate so well with each other when it comes to what they want in bed and reading on as they explored was very enjoyable. In general, I liked Scarlett and her inner turmoil. She's struggles so much with balancing school and diving. Lukas is an A+ book boyfriend, I honestly loved him. I learned way more about competitive diving and swimming than I ever thought that I would but I couldn't help but cheer for Scarlett as she got past her mental block and started doing better and better. I could have...

Book Review: Beyond the Next Star by Melody Johnson

Image
After hearing Melody Johnson talk about this book in panels at Coastal Magic Convention , I had to get my hands on it and it did not disappoint. Delaney gets abducted by aliens that think humans have an intelligence level that makes them pets. To save her life, Delaney goes along with it. Torek is experiencing PTSD after a traumatic event happened through work and it's recommended that he get a pet to help him with healing and he ends up rescuing Delaney. It's humorous while also covering serious topics through an extreme slow burn but I really enjoyed the writing style and the characters. Things did start to drag near the middle but that may have just been due to the fact that I wanted Delany break the ruse of pretending to be a pet. I can't wait to check out more of Melody's novels.

February Reads

After a January that seemed to be never ending, February passed in the blink of an eye. I managed to squeeze in 15 reads.  The favorites: Legally Binding by Sophie Snow - 4⭐, this author knows how to write smut.  Deep End by Ali Hazelwood - 3.5⭐, this surprised me. I DNF'd Love Hypothesis and I feel like Bride would have been amazing if it had been published in 2009. This Cursed Light by Emily Thiede - 4⭐, I loved the first book in this duology and while the second book didn't hit quite the same, I did enjoy it and it actually made me cry which is not easy to do. Beyond The Next Star by Melody Johnson 3.5⭐, after hearing Melody talk about this book and it's inspiration during panels at Coastal Magic Convention, I had to read this. It's a creative twist on Alien Abduction and I enjoyed it quite a bit.  Average reads, enjoyable books but nothing that I loved Slow Birth by Leta Blake - 3⭐, this novella takes place during the events of book 2 and it was nice to revist Val a...
