Reading Recommendations: Trans/Non Binary Characters


For the 2025 Trans Rights Readathon, I wanted to compile a list of books that I have enjoyed with Trans and/or Non-Binary characters. You can find more information on the readathon here. 

I personally have stuck with a focus on the characters here, authors don't owe us their backstories or pronouns.

There are a few where the character is referred to by their dead name and misgendered, due to not being out to family or due to the historical time period. I will note it next to each one. There are also a few spoilers as with some of the characters, it is not immediately revealed that they are trans.

  • I Shall Never Fall In Love by Hari Conner | Gender Non-Conforming Main Character | This pretty historical YA graphic novel has a character whose friends call them George and they wear men's clothing while in their own home, even cutting their hair short later in the book. This book has deals with the racism, queerphobia, sexism, classism, and other bigotries of the time period it takes place in.
  • The Spirit Bares It's Teeth by Andrew Joseph White | Trans Male MC, Trans Female Love Interest | This is another historical YA novel, Silas is misgendered and called the wrong name ALOT - things do get better in that aspect by the end of the book. I highly recommend looking into the TWs for this book as it gets quite graphic in a medical aspect. 
  • Most Ardently by Gabe Cole Novoa | Trans Male MC, Trans Male LI | Pride & Prejudice retelling, 
  • Sing Anyway by Anita Kelly | Non Binary MC | This novella is very sweet; I highly recommend the entire trio of novellas as they are all very good
  • A Bone in His Teeth by Kellen Graves | Trans Male MC | I had the chance to read this as an ARC before it came out and I LOVED it.
  • Hell Followed With Us by Andrew Joseph White | Trans Male | as with the first AJW book that was on this list, please check out the TWs before reading, this one deals with misgendering, cults and religious trauma. 
  • Self-Made Boys by Anna-Marie McLemore | Trans Male MC, Trans Male LI | Great Gatsby retelling, this is my personal favorite of all of the books I will list here today, I loved the writing.
  • The Many Half-Lived Lives of Sam Sylvester by Maya MacGregor | Non Binary MC
  • A Lady For A Duke by Alexis Hall | Trans Female MC
  • Out Of The Blue by Jason June | Non Binary MC 
  • Cemetary Boys by Aiden Thomas | Trans Male MC
  • The Sunbearer Trails by Aiden Thomas | Trans Male MC, Trans Female & Non Binary side characters
  • Light From Uncommon Stars by Ryka Aoki | Trans Female MC
  • Felix Ever After by Kacen Callendar| Trans Male MC

My library holds usually end up choosing for me as once I get a book up from the library, I usually want to jump right into it. I have gotten super into applying for and reading ARCs lately so deadlines for the reviews have been choosing for me lately. The time of year is also a big factor in how I choose because once September rolls around, I kick into a gear where I only wanna read horror & mystery and that won't stop until Halloween and by then I am ready for Winter and Christmas themed reads.

Tell Me Something Tuesday: How Do You Read?

That's What I'm Talking About 's Tell Me Something Tuesday   is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general.  June 3rd: Paper, electronic, audio… How do you read? Has it changed in recent years? This year I sit at 75% of the books I read being physical copies and 25% being electronic which is slightly higher than normal for me - my all time stats have ebooks making up only 18% of my total reading, I think I have been on the rise this year because I have gotten into applying for and reading ARCs. I have tried multiple times to get into audiobooks but I get distracted too easily for them. Last year I got back into going to the library and 35% of the books I have read this year have come from there instead of from my own collection of unread books.

Tell Me Something Tuesday: New To Me Authors

  That's What I'm Talking About 's Tell Me Something Tuesday   is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general.  June 10th: New to me authors: who have you discovered in the past year? I have discovered so many authors that I love in the past year! I made myself pick my top five though to keep this post from ending up too long. 1. Rebecca Ross - After ages of putting it off because I was worried it would be overhyped, I read Divine Rivals in July of last year and I immediately fell in love with her writing. She has a way with words that is so whimsical. I love the worlds and characters that she creates. I have read two more of her books since Divine Rivals and have loved every single one. I really need to focus on catching up on her backlist. 2.A.B. Poranek - I discovered this author through their debut novel, Where the Dark Stands Still. Their writing is also whimsical - the world in this book was beaut...
