Summer of Horror Rec List

Horror is a genre that I am always wanting to read more which is why I am participating in booksbonesbuffy's Summer of Horror. While I read more horror this summer, I wanted to gather a list of horror that I have read and enjoyed.

  1.  Summer Sons by Lee Mandelo
  2. Boys In The Valley by Philip Fracassi
  3. You Did Nothing Wrong by CG Drews
  4. A Box Full of Darkness by Simone St James
  5. The Sun Down Motel by Simone St. James
  6. Guillotine by Delilah S Dawson - don't let the pink cover fool you, this horror is gory and fun!
  7. Home Before Dark by Riley Sager
  8. The Winter People by Jennifer McMahon
Have you read any of these? Do you have any horror recs for me? Let me know in the comments.

  1. Yea. Nice list. I'm glad you enjoy. Horror is NOT something I read or enjoy.

  2. I haven't read Summer Sons, but Lee Mandelo's book The Woods All Black is absolutely phenomenal. Really cool exploration of historical trans identities (1920s), set in rural appalachia.

Other horror books that I think are very much worth a look
    - Walking Practice by Dolki Min: read the translator's note at the end BEFORE you start. It gives a lot of insight into the original Korean, and how they tried to replicate those effects with the font and typography in English. Body horror aplenty, and it follows a serial killer alien.
    - The Brides of High Hill by Nghi Vo: more Gothic than horror proper, this is a very short horror novella following a historian cleric as they visit a haunted noble compound.
    - Asunder by Kerstin Hall: this probably strikes the middle ground of horror and fantasy. I describe it as 'studio ghibli does horror', and the worldbuliding is delightfully weird and disturbing.

  3. The Sun Down Motel was fantastic, especially on audio! I haven't read Guillotine but I have read The Tales of Pell by Delilah S. Dawson and those were a lot of fun. But they're zany fantasy, not horror. One of my favorite horror authors of recent years is Grady Hendrix. Horrorstor isn't my favorite but I wouldn't hesitate to recommend any of the others. My Best Friend's Exorcism is my favorite, which is weird because demons scare me to death and I usually avoid them at all costs! If you're looking for something extremely creepy, Daughters Unto Devils by Amy Lukavics was terrifying. My best friend is deep in her horror era and she still texts me about how much that book scared her, several years after reading it. The narrator of the audiobook took it over the top.

  4. Great list! I loved Boys in the Valley, and of course I'm a big fan of Simone St. James. I still need to read Guillotine and The Winter People:-)
