Coastal Magic Convention is a beachside reader weekend in Daytona Beach, Florida each February. The 14th annual weekend is February 19-22, 2026, celebrating the magic of stories & storytellers. Each year’s goal is to bring authors and readers together for a memorable weekend with old friends (and new!) and to build TBR piles! Hi, my name's Victoria Sue and I've written gay male or MM romance for over twelve years. I especially like writing paranormal or fantasy.
ENHANCED. The name given to a group of humans, born in the last fifty years or so, with incredible abilities regular humans don’t have. These abilities are all because of advanced DNA changes, that are likely the result of experiments performed by geneticists Damian and Cathy Miller who died in a plane crash in 1973. Their son Christopher, and the original enhanced male, features throughout the series and he finally gets his happy ever after in book eight.
H.E.R.O. Human Enhanced Rescue Organization – The name of the SWAT -type team set up by the FBI initially to include five enhanced humans and five regular humans in an attempt to combat crime committed by enhanced individuals the regular agents were unable to deal with.
Enhanced are all male. Most enhanced develop their abilities around adolescence when a jagged scar appears on their left cheek. Some abilities aren’t discovered until later because they are simply not something a child would do. The team also know that their abilities are progressing and changing, and it’s something they are keeping secret for the time being. The incidence of enhanced has been restricted to the US. The main issue with enhanced versus the government is being stripped of basic human rights. From being denied legal rights to being denied insurance and health care.
My first pair are Talon Valdez and Finn Mayer and feature in this story.
Talon Valdez—Talon is the HERO Team leader. He comes from a large politically prominent family that includes his mother, four brothers, and one sister.
Enhanced Abilities: Talon can slow and stop anything in the human body, which can either simply put someone to sleep or can kill them. DNA changes have enabled him to gain the abilities of the other team members.
Finlay (Finn) Mayer—Finn is Talon’s partner. He is dyslexic but was never officially diagnosed nor did he receive any help because he was convinced his dyslexia would ruin his chances of joining the FBI. Finn’s family includes his mother and older brother, Deke. (Deke is a bigoted waste of space and his mom isn’t much better.) His dad committed suicide four years prior to Finn joining the FBI. His role has evolved by taking on more responsibility to educate schools and foster carers into taking displaced enhanced children.
