July 2025 Recap

Image
This year has felt like the longest and slowest year of my life. I read 17 books which is the lowest number of books I have read since February but is still an incredible amount. I keep waiting for myself to hit a reading slump because I have never read like this in my entire life. ARC Review: Saving Grace

Image
Thank you to Luna Literary for an ARC of Saving Grace. Saving Grace is about Lelia who is returning to her hometown after ten years with her newborn daughter with her. The baby's father - Drew - is a cowboy that she is known since childhood, the two of them hooked up the year prior and things between them fell apart that same night.  This might be a little toxic of me but I love the secret baby trope. I just love a man having no clue he has a kid and then getting to watch him become instantly smitten with his kid is just so fun everytime. I also like the way the parents try and skirt around each other because they want what is best with for their kid despite both wanting each other. I like the fuck it moment where they decide that they can be together and co-parent. This book hits every mark perfectly for the trope. The actual background for Lelia and Drew felt a little muddy. This book is part of an interconnected series but Goodreads does say that reading the first one just gives...

Top Ten Tuesday: Beach Reads

Image
Top Ten Tuesday was created by  The Broke and the Bookish  in June of 2010 and was moved to  That Artsy Reader Girl  in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. July 29: Beach Reads. Share books you’d take to the beach or books that take place at the beach. I have to start by saying that it was very hard for me to NOT put Beach Read by Emily Henry on this list. It's like the Beach Read of all Beach Reads and it takes place in Michigan so it's the exact kind of beaches that I grew up on but I included it on the other Top Ten Tuesdays that I participated in so I forced myself to not include it. I went with books with summer vibes that take place on or near a beach / on a vacation.  Have you read any of these? What are your favorite beach reads? Let me know in the comments.      Alex, Approximately by Jenn Bennett | GoodReads | Amazon Shipped by Angie Hockman | GoodReads ...

Non-Fiction Review: Poets Square

Image
Amazon (paid link)   I don't read a lot of non fiction but after following the poets square TikTok account for years and seeing @lindseybluherreads (on TikTok) video where she added it to her book journal, I knew I had to read this memoir.  I liked this a lot! I liked learning about Courtney's life and how the cats impacted her life, I liked reading about her life not turning out how she thought it would (very relatable) and I liked how it touched on more serious topics like unhoused individuals (especially her point on how helping stray cats being praised but helping people less fortunate than us doesn't get the same love).  If you have any recs for memoirs I should check out, drop them in the comments for me.

First Line Friday: Dear Wendy

Image
Welcome to First Line Friday! This is a weekly feature hosted by Carrie at  Reading Is My Superpower . The idea is very simple: you just share the first line (or lines) of the book you are currently reading.  "Giving love advice to the chronically heartsick students of Wellesley College is practically a full-time job." I really enjoyed this book and I feel like the first line did awesome job of setting the mood for the book and for the character that writes advice as Wendy. Synopsis: Dear Wendy's Sophie and Jo, two aromantic and asexual students at Wellesley College, engage in an online feud while unknowingly becoming friends in real life, in this dual POV Young Adult contemporary debut from Ann Zhao Sophie Chi is in her first year at Wellesley College (despite her parents’ wishes that she attend a “real” university, rather than a liberal arts school) and has long accepted her aromantic and asexual identities. Despite knowing she’ll never fall in love, she enjoys running ...

Review: What Happens In Amsterdam

Image
As a woman in her late 20s that has no clue what she is doing with her life, I really enjoyed this. The marriage of convenience trope hits every time. Dani was fun and relatable - she did kind of frustrate me near the end because she wasn't growing as a character or owning up to things even though Wouter had been nothing but patient and loving but she pulled her head out of her ass at the end and put in the work to fix things with him. Synopsis: Dani Dorfman has somehow made it to her thirties without knowing what she wants to do with her life. So when an office romance ends poorly and gets her fired, she applies for a job in Amsterdam, idly dreaming of escaping the mess she’s created, but never imagining she'll actually get it. Except she does. By the end of her first week in Amsterdam, she’s never felt more adrift or alone. Then she crashes her bike into her high school ex-boyfriend—and suddenly life is blooming with new opportunities. Wouter van Leeuwen was a Dutch exchang...

Top Ten Tuesday: Set in Michigan

Image
Top Ten Tuesday was created by  The Broke and the Bookish  in June of 2010 and was moved to  That Artsy Reader Girl  in January of 2018. It was born of a love of lists, a love of books, and a desire to bring bookish friends together. July 22: Books Set In Michigan The moment I read the prompt, I knew that I was going to pick Michigan. I was born and raised in Michigan and while I know it isn't perfect, I love my state a lot. Some of these are set in real Michigan towns and some are fictional.  Have you read any of these? Do you know of any Michigan fiction novels that I missed? Let me know in the comments below.

Review: First- Time Caller by B.K. Borison

Image
This book delivers the best of found family. Lucie has her daughter, her baby daddy, his husband, her best friend and all of her mechanic coworkers that all want the best for her. I I love the banter between Lucie and Aiden, I loved watching as Aiden kept showing up for Lucie while not realizing that he was falling in love with her. My heart really broke for him because watching his mother go through cancer treatments had really warped the way he viewed the year, I absolutely loved how he called his dad when he realized how he had been acting - it was nice to read two men having such an in-depth deep conversation like that. This was my first B.K. Borison book but it won't be my last. Synopsis: A hopeless romantic meets a jaded radio host in this cozy, Sleepless in Seattle-inspired love story from beloved author B.K. Borison. Aiden Valentine has a secret: he's fallen out of love with love. And as the host of Baltimore's romance hotline, that's a bit of a problem. But w...

First Line Friday! Meme

Image
Welcome to First Line Friday! This is a weekly feature hosted by Carrie at Reading Is My Superpower . The idea is very simple: you just share the first line (or lines) of the book you are currently reading.  I love judging books by their first line. When I am book shopping at a physical store, I will read the synopsis and then the first line before deciding if I am going to buy it. I am cheating a little bit on this prompt as this line isn't from my current read but is instead from my favorite read so far this year. "It is one hour before Camilla's life changes, though she doesn't yet know it." It is June 21st, the longest day of the year, and new mother Camilla’s life is about to change forever. After months of maternity leave, she will drop her infant daughter off at daycare for the first time and return to her job as a literary agent. Finally. But, when she wakes, her husband Luke isn’t there, and in his place is a cryptic note. Then it starts. Breaking news: ...

Review: Bear With Me by Nicole Blanchard

Image
Nicole Blanchard's Bear With Me Novella features Sullivan who goes by Sully who is moving with her twin brother to live with her grandmother after the unexpected death of their parents. Since they lost their parents, Sully has begun seeing the memories of others and objects with just a touch - something her brother does not understand and has had her withdrawing from their close bond. During their first week in their new town, Sully's brother insists on her attending a party with him and once there, she meets Declan, a big burly man who lives in the woods that she is shocked to find that she can't read any memories from.  This has all the makings of a good shifter romance, but it missed the mark. There is so much going on with Sully's powers and Declan's shifter ability and grief that they both have that the romance never got to develop. I feel like the book alluded to Sully and Declan being fated mates and that is why they connect so quickly but it never says that,...

Review: Madison Square Murders by CS Poe

Image
Growing up, my all time favorite crime TV drama was Cold Case. My mom would rotate through watching them all but none of them ever grabbed my attention the way Cold Case did. I liked the back and forth between time periods and the main detective - Lilly was such a badass. All of that to say, I was very excited to read this book.  Madison Square Murders is told from the POV of cold case detective Everett Larkin as he starts a case where a skeleton has been unearthed by a fallen tree in Madison Square Park in New York. With the skeleton, there is a metal death mask which leads him to reaching out to Ira Doyle - a forensics art detective.  Larkin is a very interesting character which is clear from the beginning - he has HSAM (highly superior autobiographical memory) from a traumatic brain injury and he is neurodivergent from the way he talks to some of his mannerisms. Doyle is a treat honestly - I liked him from the moment he was introduced, he has a lot of depth and is st...

Each year’s goal is to bring authors and readers together for a memorable weekend with old friends (and new!) and to build TBR piles! This year, the theme for the event is “Secret Garden: Reading Helps Your Mind Bloom”. Nicole Blanchard is a New York Times and USA Today bestselling author of over twenty-five novels ranging from small-town heroes to the villains you love to hate. Her stories are packed with twists, grit, heart, and alll the heat — just the way readers like them. When she’s not plotting her next twisted love story, she’s soaking up sweet tea and sunshine at the beach, parked in the tattoo chair, or tending to her farm full of misfit pets. 1. What got you into writing? How long have you been writing? Reading, honestly. I’ve always been a bookworm. I read a lot, probably too mu...

ARC Review: Riptide by Meg

Image
Thank you to LoveNotesPR and Meghan Hollie for allowing me to read an ARC of Riptide! My thoughts: This book surprised the hell out of me. I only apply for ARCs that I am interested in reading so I always expect to like them at least a little bit but I am shocked by how much I loved this book. The depth of the characters and the chemistry between them is amazing. I loved the way Meghan Hollie wrote grief - this book covers grieving someone who has passed away and grieving for people that are still alive but are no longer in the life of one of the main characters- both forms of grief are so valid and I loved reading as these two acknowledged their grief and worked to heal from it. I loved that Finn and Foxx don't fix each other - they fix themselves with the support of the other, they fix themselves knowing that the other is going to be there to hold them afterwards. I got nervous near the end when the ex-husband of Foxx showed up but I loved how it turned out. It was amazing to re...
