Review: My Orc Next Door by Veronika Kane
I have been on an Orc kick lately and Veronika Kane is to blame.
In My Orc Next Door, we meet Jess who is trying to revitalize the small town of Eastshore Isle and Karnak, her recluse orc next door neighbor. Jess and Karnak have lived next door to each other for 4 years but have never spoken despite him knowing that she is his fated mate. This novel follows them as they finally begin speaking and falling for each other.
It was fun to read them trying to figure each other out. Karnak has a lot of beliefs about how humans operate, and he some trauma from when he first came to our world that keep him from initiating things with Jess. Well Jess was always aware that Karnak is an orc, it's clear that she had never thought much about how exactly that made him different. Overall, I went into it expecting a fun and kind of silly romance and that is exactly what it delivered. I like how this one set up for more orcs to come to Eastshore Isle - I can't think of a better way to populate a dying beach town than with hot green men with tusks?
My least favorite thing about this book was the way that Jess would break the fourth wall and address the audience. I don't enjoy this in any novel as it pulls me out of story.
This is my first read for the Coastal Magic Reading Challenge and I am super excited to be participating. Find out more information here.
I don't know that I will read this, but that cover is awesome!
