ARC Review: A Requiem of Fallen Stars by Hazel S Wilkes

Thank you to The Nerd Fam and Hazel S Wilkes for allowing me to read an ARC! These thoughts are my own.

This romantasy is excellent for a debut novel! The characters were interesting, the plot was well thought out and not like any fantasy novel I have read before especially the trials that the characters go through. The romance is mostly slow burn, we don't even meet the love interest until around the 25% mark but once they do finally realize their feelings for each other, they begin to move very fast and very passionately which for me kind of ruined things for me - just the two characters going from not even realizing they have romantic feelings for someone to making passionate love declarations was kind of jarring. I love the found family vibes, Lyra's platonic relationship with Gray was a favorite of mine. Just the way that they always had each others backs and how they were legit just friends was very refreshing. I liked Lyra finding a good female friendship with Marcella. I liked learning the magic system along with Lyra and getting to watch her grow stronger - not just emotionally but physically as well.

My least favorite part was the ending. This book is over 600 pages so it already has a lot going on and so much happened in the last 40 pages that it was hard to keep track of and it changed everything that we had just spent over 500 pages learning. I think this story would have hit even harder if it had been split up into more than one book instead of dropping bombshell after bombshell at the end of this one.

  1. I like the sound of the found family and world. Too bad the romance moved too fast to feel genuine.

  2. I think the new rush to have the next hit romantasy is taking a toll on the stories. I tend to shy away from them now, while I really enjoyed Fantasy Romance in the past.
