Book Review: Problematic Summer Romance by Ali Hazelwood

Image
My thoughts:  I have a very odd relationship with Ali Hazelwood. Back when Love Hypothesis came out, I disliked it so much that I couldn't even finish it. When Deep End came out, I was seeing so much about how dirty it was that I HAD to read it and I actually ended up LOVING it. Since then, I have read the STEMinist novellas which were a let down from Deep End but an improvement from Love Hypothesis. I thought that I would love Problematic Summer Romance, I love an age gap, and this isn't even the first one I have read this month but damn, this way a disappointment.  This book does more telling than it does showing, and I just never connected with why Maya had feelings for Conor or why she felt the need to keep pushing when he was making it clear that their age gap was a deal breaker for him. I wish there had been less of Maya chasing after Conor and more of Conor going after her - I understood his reservations but she is constantly the one making moves and he either ca...

Tell Me Something Tuesday: Choosing your next read

That's What I'm Talking About 's Tell Me Something Tuesday   is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general.  June 17th: How do you choose what to read next? I am a big mood reader, and my mood is always changing so I typically don't follow any kind of schedule for reading - I just kind of look around at what I own and grab what sounds best. My library holds usually end up choosing for me as once I get a book up from the library, I usually want to jump right into it. I have gotten super into applying for and reading ARCs lately so deadlines for the reviews have been choosing for me lately. The time of year is also a big factor in how I choose because once September rolls around, I kick into a gear where I only wanna read horror & mystery and that won't stop until Halloween and by then I am ready for Winter and Christmas themed reads.

Review: My Orc Next Door by Veronika Kane

Image
I have been on an Orc kick lately and Veronika Kane is to blame.  In My Orc Next Door, we meet Jess who is trying to revitalize the small town of Eastshore Isle and Karnak, her recluse orc next door neighbor. Jess and Karnak have lived next door to each other for 4 years but have never spoken despite him knowing that she is his fated mate. This novel follows them as they finally begin speaking and falling for each other. It was fun to read them trying to figure each other out. Karnak has a lot of beliefs about how humans operate, and he some trauma from when he first came to our world that keep him from initiating things with Jess. Well Jess was always aware that Karnak is an orc, it's clear that she had never thought much about how exactly that made him different. Overall, I went into it expecting a fun and kind of silly romance and that is exactly what it delivered. I like how this one set up for more orcs to come to Eastshore Isle - I can't think of a better way to populate ...

Tell Me Something Tuesday: New To Me Authors

That's What I'm Talking About 's Tell Me Something Tuesday   is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general.  June 10th: New to me authors: who have you discovered in the past year? I have discovered so many authors that I love in the past year! I made myself pick my top five though to keep this post from ending up too long. 1. Rebecca Ross - After ages of putting it off because I was worried it would be overhyped, I read Divine Rivals in July of last year and I immediately fell in love with her writing. She has a way with words that is so whimsical. I love the worlds and characters that she creates. I have read two more of her books since Divine Rivals and have loved every single one. I really need to focus on catching up on her backlist. 2.A.B. Poranek - I discovered this author through their debut novel, Where the Dark Stands Still. Their writing is also whimsical - the world in this book was beaut...

ARC Review: A Requiem of Fallen Stars by Hazel S Wilkes

Image
Thank you to The Nerd Fam and Hazel S Wilkes for allowing me to read an ARC! These thoughts are my own. This romantasy is excellent for a debut novel! The characters were interesting, the plot was well thought out and not like any fantasy novel I have read before especially the trials that the characters go through. The romance is mostly slow burn, we don't even meet the love interest until around the 25% mark but once they do finally realize their feelings for each other, they begin to move very fast and very passionately which for me kind of ruined things for me - just the two characters going from not even realizing they have romantic feelings for someone to making passionate love declarations was kind of jarring. I love the found family vibes, Lyra's platonic relationship with Gray was a favorite of mine. Just the way that they always had each others backs and how they were legit just friends was very refreshing. I liked Lyra finding a good female friendship with Marcella. ...

ARC Review: Whispers of Helena by Ashley Warren

Image
I wanna a start with a huge thank you to Luna Literary and Ashley Warren for allowing me to join the ARC team for this book, these thoughts are my own. This gothic cowboy romance did not at all go down the way I thought it would. In the first half of Whispers of Helena, a widowed woman becomes nanny to the son of a widower ranch owner and tension grows between them as it becomes clear that things are not what they seem on the ranch. From the start, this book nailed it with the suspenseful vibes, I was instantly hooked into the story, and I highly recommend listening to the playlist that the author has in the front of the book as it takes the vibes to a whole another level. I loved the tension and the angst of Silas not wanting to develop feelings for Helena as he mourns his wife, it was so good. I really liked the smut scenes - to me, the way Silas was torn up making him a more dominant sexual partner made sense, and I had fun reading it.   Shortly before the 50% mark, there i...

Tell Me Something Tuesday: How Do You Read?

That's What I'm Talking About 's Tell Me Something Tuesday   is a weekly discussion post where bloggers discuss a wide range of topics from books and blogging to life in general.  June 3rd: Paper, electronic, audio… How do you read? Has it changed in recent years? This year I sit at 75% of the books I read being physical copies and 25% being electronic which is slightly higher than normal for me - my all time stats have ebooks making up only 18% of my total reading, I think I have been on the rise this year because I have gotten into applying for and reading ARCs. I have tried multiple times to get into audiobooks but I get distracted too easily for them. Last year I got back into going to the library and 35% of the books I have read this year have come from there instead of from my own collection of unread books.

Cover Reveal: Riptide by Meghan Hollie

Image
Excited to share the cover of   Riptide  by Meghan Hollie! Coming July 3rd! What to expect:   MM Romance  Age Gap  Forbidden  Healing/Moving On From Loss     BLURB     Finn: I came home to forget the ocean. To forget what it took from me. Surfing used to be everything, until it became the thing I couldn't survive. Now, I'm stuck in my hometown, dodging questions, helping my twin sister by looking after my niece. All the while, pretending I've got a plan. A hookup app was supposed to be just a distraction. Nothing serious. But then I met Foxx. He's smart, serious and hot as hell. I swiped right without knowing he'd wreck me in the best possible way. Foxx: After my divorce, I built a life I could manage. It was quiet, structured and safe. Numbers always made sense to me hence my job as a math Professor. People though? Not so much. Especially not flirty blond surfers who crash into my life with too many secrets and no right to make me ...

Reading Recap: May 2025

After reading 18 books in March and 21 books in April, I expected to hit a reading slumping but that wasn't the case as I read 18 books in April. Here is a short recap for each of my reads. How many books did you read in May? Any new favorites? Let me know in the comments. Our Infinite Fates by Laura Steven | 2.5 Stars. Two people being reincarnated, always falling in love but also always killing each other. Sounds like an amazing plot but I did not like this one at all. Despite spanning so much time and so many different kinds of lives, this book lacks depth. I just couldn't get myself to care for any of the characters and I wasn't rooting for them to figure out why they were stuck in their loop. Give Me Butterflies by Jillian Meadows | 3 Stars. A cute grumpy x sunshine workplace romance. I liked the way that the leads supported each other. Galatea by Madeline Miller | 3 Stars. While not what I expected from this author, this short read was still good. You can check out my...
