Book Review: The Other Side of Midnight by Simone St. James

This is the 6th Simone St James book that I have read and while I consider myself a big fan of hers, her books are always hit or miss for me. I am super happy because this one was a hit, my 3rd favorite of the 6 that I have read.

Our main character is Ellie who has psychic abilities but instead of using them to do seances to see dead people like most psychics do, she uses them to find lost objects. When she was younger, her mother did seances that Ellie assisted her with. Ellie was also friends with a young psychic named Gloria. The book begins with Gloria's older brother asking Ellie to investigate the murder of Gloria. Throughout the events of the book, we meet James who makes a living outing psychics as frauds, and we learn what lead to the falling out between Gloria and Ellie which took place prior to the start of the book.

I really liked Ellie, her powers and the struggles that she goes through with them was very interesting to read. I liked meeting the side characters - a lot of them were very interesting whether they were legit psychics or scam artists. The tension between James and Ellie was *chefs kiss*. If there is one thing that Simone St. James is going to have in her mystery novels, it's a supportive man. The woman is going through it trying to solve something, but she's got a man that supports and assists her, and I eat it up every time. I did guess part of what was going on but I still think it was a fun twist.

If you are thinking of checking out Simone St. James books, I highly recommend The Broken Girls and The Sun Down Motel.
