Coffin Moon by Keith Rosson | 3 Stars
Coffin Moon follows a man named Minor and his niece Julia after her grandma, grandpa and aunt (his wife) are brutally murdered by a vampire named Varley. Overall, I wanted more from this novel. I feel like it had so much potential to be an angry bloody revenge quest and it just fell flat. Julia was the driving force behind the revenge and Minor was just along for the ride which is what kept it from fully packing the punch. We spent way more time in Varley's head than I would have liked - he's not likable and I don't feel like knowing his backstory added anything to the story. There was also a time jump that I was really disappointed by.
Listen To Your Sister by Neena Viel | 3 Stars
As an oldest sister, I knew I needed to read Listen To Your Sister. This book follows siblings Calla, Dre and Jamie. Calla has become the guardian for teenage Jamie after their mother was deemed unfit to take care of him, Dre promised Calla he would help her but has generally been hands off. When the boys run into trouble, they convince their sister to head to a cabin in the woods to hide away for a few days. Calla is haunted by nightmares where terrible things happen to her brothers, and she is unable to stop it. While at the cabin, things shit hits the fan and the nightmare becomes reality for all three of them. This wasn't quite like anything that I have read before. It blurs the lines between nightmares and reality while having a good twist at the end. Despite this, I never really connected with the story - the pacing of the first half was slow, and I really felt like Dre and Jamie were way too hard on Calla.
The Caretaker by Marcus Kliewer | 4 Stars
The Caretaker follows Macy Mullins as she is hired to house sit for a woman named Grace. This isn't any ordinary house-sitting job as the house comes with a series of Rites that must be completed in order to keep an evil entity from being released on the world. Despite following the rites herself, Grace insists that the rites were just her husband losing his mind but she's willing to pay Macy a lot of money to spend the weekend completing the rites. This book had me on the edge of my seat and honestly, the only thing that kept me from giving it 5 stars was my frustration with Macy, she was never able to decide if she wanted to take the rites seriously or not and she was also very bad at completing them - I suppose we wouldn't have had much of a novel if she followed them to a T but I kept having the thought of "I would be much better at completing these tasks". I really appreciated the warning about mental health and suicide that was at the beginning of the book as this book would have knocked me on my ass without it.
