Mini Reviews: Audiobook Novellas Part 1

Normally, I am unable to get into audiobooks, I tend to get sidetracked while listening to them and then I zone back in an entire chapter later but I recently discovered that if it's an audiobook novella - no more than 2.5 hours long, I have no problem listening to it. Amazons Original Stories Meet Cute Novellas are perfect for this.

The Exception To The Rule by Christina Lauren | 3.75 Stars

I loved this! This book reminded me why I've read 20 Christina Lauren books. The premise - two teenagers begin emailing each other every Valentines Day after one of them sends an email to the wrong address- was so fun and I really enjoyed the banter that went back and forth between the main characters. I liked all the near misses of them meeting up and I liked how close they were irl without ever realizing. I listened to this on a long drive home and was legit grinning half the time. I will admit that there was some cringe worthy dirty talk that made me bump this down .25 stars.

Accidentally Yours by Christina Lauren | 3 Stars

For the most part, I feel like the problem here wasn't the novella, it was just that I listened to it immediately after listening to Exception to the Rule. This one is about a woman that joins the wrong zoom call, leading to her roasting some tech bros and their boss is so impressed that he hunts her down and offers her a job. The two quickly begin emailing back and forth and it quickly turns flirty all while the two of them are unknowingly neighbors. This group of novellas is about second chances, and their second chance happens due to an assumption made by the FMC which I really did not like.

Time Will Tell by Hannah Bonam-Young | 3.5 Stars

I loved this! This novella follows a woman as she receives instructions from her recently deceased grandmother pointing her towards a time capsule that was buried with a former lover prior to the grandmother meeting her grandfather. This leads her to finding the grandson of the lover to see if his family has the key to the time capsule. The emails between them were so fun, I loved the flirty banter that developed between them and I was grinning as I listened to their phone calls. I loved the scene where they met in the person for the first time. I only gave 3.5 stars as I didn't love as much as other Hannah Bonam-Young books that I've read but this novella cemented that I truly love her writing and I can't wait to continue reading her work.

Second Act Romance by Julie Soto | 3 Stars

My least favorite of this batch! Second Act Romance follows two actors as they are reunited for a performance of Oklahoma after the leads of the show are unable to perform due to food poisoning. The FMC and MMC met years ago in a similar situation where and despite sparks flying between them, they never connected post-performance. I felt like this novella told me more than it showed me, I was told that there was chemistry between them but because they spent almost all of the book focused on their performance, we were never actually shown the chemistry, and it really took away from my enjoyment of the book. I think the plot was just too hectic for a novella of this length.
