Review: Protect by Paisley Hope (Sky Ridge Hotshots Book 2)

Rating: 3 Stars

This book shook things up a bit compared to the first one as the POV's alternated between 10 years prior and present day. This book is about Rowan, a firefighter who lost his best friend to the job prior to the start of the book and Violette, the twin sister of his lost best friend who has moved back to town with her daughter after leaving her husband. Rowan and Violette have a past - at the end of their senior year, things between them blossomed into more than friendship but Rowan broke her heart, and she left town shortly after. When she moves back, Violette doesn't want anything to do with Rowan, she isn't the young girl that crushed after him while they grew up, but Rowan is determined to get back on her good side. The two are forced to spend time together when an accident during a forest fire results in him having to spend some time in the burn unit where she works. The past POV slowly reveals why Rowan did what he did while letting us know a bit more about the deceased brother.

Honestly, the book loses it's spark after the reveal. I just didn't care as much when it became clear that once she knew the truth, they were going to easily be together. I don't consider myself a fan of third act drama but I guess I need more action than this. The chemistry between Rowan and Violette just wasn't as strong as the chemistry between Cal & Scottie from Book 1.

Synopsis:

Rowan Kingsley

Imagine coming into the town pub with my crew, dirty and exhausted, only to walk right into my biggest regret. The twin sister of my lost best friend and the one who got away. I haven’t seen Violette Taylor in years but I haven’t forgotten her either.

I used to be Rowan to her. Now, I’m just King, the guy who broke her heart, but not for the reasons she thinks.

Violette is back in town for good, she's a single mom and a nurse in the burn unit I accidentally wind up in.

Can you call that fate? Maybe, if she wasn’t doing her best to stay far away from anyone who reminded her of her past, especially a career hotshot like me. But I know something she doesn’t; life rarely offers second chances. So, if this is my chance to finally make things right, I’m taking it.
