I liked this book quite a bit. It's fast paced and an easy read. This book is about Callahan who has spent the past five years since losing his dad to the job being a bit of a playboy and Scottie who has moved to the town after running away from her super religious borderline cult like family. The two meet at a local bar and hit it off, later hooking up at a job. My biggest issue with this book is the miscommunication that takes place - calling it miscommunication feels wrong; it's actually no communication. Cal finds out something about Scottie through smalltown gossip and through someone he doesn't like. Instead of talking with her, he decides to drop their blooming relationship and begin treating her poorly. It bothers me so much that he listened to someone that has done him wrong in the past instead of just asking her.
Scottie is a badass. She was able to see how wrong the way she was raised was and she took the steps to leave that behind. She doesn't let the hiccup with Cal stop her from getting comfortable in her new town. The two of them are forced back together when a hike goes wrong. I liked that this forced them to help each other, and it forced Cal to finally talk to her about what he had been told. After that, things do move very quickly between the two of them but to me it didn't feel like insta-love. They talk a lot about their pasts and the chemistry between them was so good.
There was something about this book that I really loved, and this is the best way for me to word it: Imagine after moving to a small town, you notice a nice house while on a jog. This house becomes your motivation in life. You want to do well at work and establish yourself in the area so you can live in that house. While on jogs, you make up stories about what the family that lives there must be like and you picture how you would decorate the house if you lived there. Imagine later meeting and falling in love with a guy and when he takes you to his place for the first time - his house is that house.
Synopsis:
Callahan
Fighting wildfires is the only thing I’ve ever wanted to do and I’m damn good at it. Being the captain of an interagency hotshot crew of wildland firefighters is high-risk, high-reward. The risk blindsided me five years ago when I lost one of my crew and was changed forever. Now the only rewards I allow are to work harder, smarter, and enjoy easy, sexy nights with strangers.
Until I meet Prescott Timmons. Her smart-mouth and adventurous spirit have me forgetting all of my rules—until her past shows up and lies start to feel too familiar. I swear to never spare her a second glance, but when she finds herself in a life or death situation with mother nature, my instincts kick in, and I take action. Stranded and sharing a bed again, we’re forced to face our truth. Do we let this fire burn out or fight?
