Beckett Krane Q & A

Beckett Krane is a queer author from the Midwest who writes romantic adventures steeped in fantasy. When they're not writing, they watch over a menagerie of rescue animals, get lost in the forest, and daydream about their next book.

How long have you been writing?

Almost twenty years! I still have my small notebook from when I was seven, with pages scrawled full of stories from an overactive imagination.

What is your favorite part of being an author?

Being able to finally make sense of the bits and pieces of story in my head and organize them in a way that’s both true to the vision I have, and engaging for others to experience with me. Readers messaging me to say they felt so seen by my stories is also a highlight!

Have you experienced writers block and how do you handle it?

Writer’s block hits frequently for me, but I always tell myself just don’t stop writing. Once you stop the momentum of writing every day, it’s hard to start that habit again!

Can you describe your writing space?

I have a writing desk, but most often I write on my couch with a cat or two on my lap, or in my hammock outside with the dog keeping watch.

How do you choose names for your characters?

I go for the most moanable name that suits the character (and if they’re really special I look up names that mean something)

What has helped you the most while writing?

Music is the driving force behind most, if not all of my writing. The first thing I do for a WIP is put together a playlist.

Do you outline, plot and plan or is your writing more organic?

A little of both! I like a good outline as long as it’s flexible enough to modify while I’m writing when better ideas come along. I never used to be a plotter but it genuinely helps the flow so much.

How much research have you had to do for your book(s)?

Chapel at Ender’s Ridge is probably one of, if not the most researched book I’ll ever write. I bought so many books about the Wild West and had to learn everything from the type of whiskey that was available to what would have been used as lube back then. And then there was the vampire lore to brush up on, as well as rereading sections of the Bible that I haven’t touched since confirmation class.

Do you read much and if so, who are your favorite authors?

I hit my goal of 50 books last year, and among my favs were Mawce Hanlin, Daniel May, Viano Oniomoh, Ally North, and Tonja K. Johnson.
