Huge thank you to the author, Rachel LaBerge for allowing me to read an ARC of this novel.
From The Sidelines kicks off (pun intended) the Breaking Barriers series with former college soccer player, Blair, becoming a kicker for the Upstate Cosmos after winning a pregame competition. On the team is her college best friend Tyson and after years of avoiding their feelings for each other, time finally feels right to the two of them. This book was missing a spark for me. I wanted more from the relationship between Tyson and Blair like they just weren't communicating at all and then they jumped right into the sexual side of things, and I would have enjoyed things more if they had done more talking. I did really enjoy Blair's mental health struggles and how she dealt with that - this is something I know to expect from Rachel's books, and I love it every time. I also loved the positive reaction to Blair being the first female NFL player and I think the inclusion of news articles was a really nice touch.
Synopsis:
Blair Miller is used to pressure. Former college soccer star, gym owner, relentless competitor—she thrives on challenge. But nothing could have prepared her for life as the NFL’s first female player. Overnight, she’s gone from coaching classes at Embers & Ashes to breaking barriers and kicking extra points for the Upstate Cosmos.
Crowds? Cameras? Press? Blair can handle it. A whole different kind of challenge is Tyson Bishop–her best friend, biggest what-if, and now her teammate.
Tyson’s loved Blair for as long as he can remember—quietly, patiently, from the sidelines. Now between every look, every practice, and every moment they shouldn’t want more… it’s getting harder to hold back.
They’ve spent years playing it safe. Maybe it’s time to rewrite the playbook?
