August 8: Reading Slump vs Bookish Hangover (Jillian @ Jillian the Bookish Butterfly)

Prompts: What’s the difference between a reading slump and bookish hangover—do you think there’s a difference? How do you get out of both situations? What are examples of books that put you in a reading slump and books that caused you to have a book hangover? For more information, Book Riot has some really interesting articles about using neuroscience to understand reading slumps and the psychology of a book hangover.

To me, a reading slump is when I am not in the mood to read anything at all and a book hangover is when I am only in the mood for the book / series that I just finished. When I am in a slump, most of the time, I will let myself go a couple days without reading since I find that forcing myself to read makes things even worse. If it lasts more than a few days, I will let myself reread a favorite book which usually does the trick. When I have a book hangover, I tend to try reading something else by that author or I find something similar to read. I find that book slumps effect me more than book hangovers.

As far as examples, I don't have any to share for what puts me into a slump because it's usually books that I don't like or I don't end up finishing. As far as examples for book hangovers, anything written by VE Schwab leaves me with a hangover. I always want more from them as I love the worlds that they create and the way that their mind works.

  1. Schwab does have a fantastic ability for giving me a book hangover and as far as I can recall, it was actually Addie La Rue that gave me my last hangover! I agree that reading slumps affect me more than hangovers, but for me, I think that could also depend on the level of hangover the book sends me into, lol. I once had a book hangover for 3 months and it was intense! 🤭 Thanks for joining LTB this week!

  2. I agree with you 100%. Slumps tend to just happen for me. Sometimes it's because my current read is not grabbing my attention, but usually it's also because of external factors. I tend to jump in with another book, even if I don't feel like it due to the book hangover, so it doesn't lead into a slump.
